Available Options
Indian Threadfin, also known as Soon Fong (顺丰) in Cantonese and Kurau in Malay.
Highly prized as a premium fish, Indian Threadfin has fine, delicate flesh with a mild, naturally sweet flavour. Compared to Fourfinger Threadfin (Senangin), Kurau has a finer texture with smaller flakes, even in larger fish. Its skin is also thinner, less gelatinous and more delicate in flavour.
Kurau is also a popular choice for postpartum meals, as it is traditionally believed to help boost breast milk supply for new mothers. It is especially delicious when steamed with ginger and soy sauce, pan-fried until golden, or cooked in traditional fish soup.
Indian Threadfin is seasonal and not caught daily, so availability depends on the day's catch.
